Themes
1. Be proud of who and what you are.
Sarah is constantly downgraded for being Jewish. Yet she refuses to feel ashamed and she holds her head high. The author might have been trying to show that even when you are put down stand up for what you feel is right even if you’re standing alone.
2. Be Brave
This seems to be a motif in the book the line “you must be brave” comes up many times. Tatiana De Rosnay could very well have been saying that when times get hard and all else failed you must be brave to get past that and carry on.
3. Keeping you promises and fulfilling your duty.
In the story little Sarah is constantly driven by the need to go back to her brother like she promised she would and let him free. Rosnay is saying that you need to keep the promises that you make if only just to see what happens in the end even when the outcome might very well be grave.
